Homework

Homework weeks 7 and 8

We have nearly reached the end of the year and what a wonderful year it has been. All children have worked very hard throughout the year. Each child will soon be spending time looking back at what they were able to do at the beginning of the year, and what they can do now.

This will be the last homework for the year.

Reading: Read for 15 to 30 minutes every day. Write a summary of what you are reading each week on KnowledgeNet (Reading learning journal), or in your Homelink book.

Spelling: Learn the meanings of the following words and write each one into a sentence. Learn to spell each word. There will be a spelling test at the end of week 8.
Christmas, present, gift, wrapping, elves, angel, sleigh, ornaments, reindeer, stable

Writing/Religious Education: Research the true meaning of Christmas. See what interesting facts you can find. You can record your findings on KnowledgeNet (Topic learning journal), or in your Homelink books.

Mathematics: Plan a Christmas lunch or dinner for your family. Use the items and prices in the brochures (junk mail) and create a menu. List all the items and add up all the prices. Sometimes, you might need to double or halve the items and prices to get the correct amount (Eg, 20kg of chicken drumsticks will be a bit much for four people!). As it is a Christmas menu, you can spend as much as you like on your meal! Write down your menu and prices, including the total price, on KnowledgeNet (Mathematics learning journal), or in your Homelink book.

Homework due: 7 December

Homework Weeks 5 and 6

Week 5 will be a busy week with the School Production in progress and two late nights for everyone. The homework that I have set will not be as intense over the next two weeks because children will have less time to complete it.

Reading: Read for 15 to 30 minutes every day (when possible in week 5). Most children will be reading chapter books in class over the next two weeks. They will have a range of titles to choose from at their reading level. Children will be able to take some of these books home to read as well. Please make sure that these books come to school every day so that they can be read during group work.

Writing: Visit the forum on KnowledgeNet. You will find this question to answer. What has been the most memorable time at school this year? Why?

Spelling: Learn the meanings of the following words and write each one into a sentence. Learn to spell each word. reveal, eventually, suggest, type, sparkle, jewels, explain, between, towards, straight

Mathematics: You are learning to double and halve measurements. Find any recipe and double the ingredients. Then  halve the original recipe. Show how you worked out how to double and halve the ingredients in your Homelink Book.

Homework due: 23 November

Homework Weeks 3 and 4
Great homework last week! What a wonderful display of posters we have in our class. This information will be helpful when we look in-depth at Fairytales.

Spelling: We are having a big push on spelling this term with children learning to spell words on the essential spelling lists which can also be found in the Homelink books. Please keep this going at home as these words are the ones that are used most often in writing.
Reading: Continue to read for at least 15 minutes every night. Ask an adult to read you a story as well. If you don't know a word, try to sound it out, read back or read on to understand what it means. Do not just forget about the word. Ask someone else what it means and discuss the meaning of the word within the sentence. Go to www.freerice.com to learn the meanings of a whole range of words. Click on vocabulary.
Mathematics: This week, you will be taught how to create a tally chart to collect information. Create two tally charts over the next two weeks. Remember, a tally chart lists the names down the side and then you use a line for each vote. Ask your family members and friends. Collect information on:
  1. Favourite pets (List 6 common pets and ask 10 - 15 people what their favourite pet is from the list you have).
  2. Favourite take-aways (List 5 - 6 take-aways like pizza, KFC, fish and chips etc. Ask 10 - 15 people what their favourite take-away is from the list you have).
Writing: Lately, there has been lots of discussion around using more technology such as ipads and computers in classrooms. Mostly, it's adults who are doing the talking. It would be interesting to hear a child's point of view on this matter. Here is a statement for you to think about;
In schools, all children should only use an ipad to read books and do their writing.  Do you agree or disagree? Do you see a positive and a negative side to this statement? Write what you think about this matter.

Homework due: 9 November

Choose activities that suit your family timetable over the two weeks. Any feedback on administering homework in this way would be most welcome.
